Rays didn't get a bat? So what
The Rays were criticized in some circles for not picking up a bat at the trade deadline.
But a Sports Illustrated survey of five baseball executives says the Rays did just fine.
"Tampa Bay didn't have to do too much," said one.
"They probably should have gotten a bat. But they have a very good team as is,'' said another.
SI baseball writer Jon Heyman, who authored the piece, agreed, even liking the one move the Rays made, acquiring reliever Chad Qualls from the Diamondbacks.
"Those comments are exactly right,'' Heyman wrote. "Knowing Tampa Bay, Qualls will actually pitch better there than he did for the Diamondbacks, for whom he had an 8.29 ERA.''
The Rangers, who acquired Cliff Lee, Mark Lowe, Cristian Guzman, Jorge Cantu and Bengie Molina, fared the best, according to the executives. The Padres (Ryan Ludwick, Miguel Tejada) and Yankees (Lance Berkman, Kerry Wood, Austin Kearns) also earned kudos.
