Stamkos up for ESPY Award
The ESPY Awards are not exactly sports' version of the Oscars. They're more like the sports version of the MTV Movie Awards. Fans get to vote on such things as "Best Play'' and "Best Moment'' and "Best Game'' and so forth. Anyway, the Lightning's Steven Stamkos is a nominee in the category of "Best NHL Player.'' But he appears to be a longshot to win. Also in the catagory: Olympic and NHL stars Sidney Crosby (Penguins) and Ryan Miller (Sabres), former league MVP Alex Ovechkin (Capitals) and Vancouver's Henrik Sedin, named the 2009-10 NHL MVP on Wednesday night.
It didn't seem out of the realm of possibility that the Rays' Evan Longoria might be up for "Best MLB Player,'' but Longo did not make the list. Instead, the nominees are Albert Pujols, Joe Mauer, Derek Jeter and a pair of pitchers -- Tim Lincecum and Zack Grienke.
The ESPYs will be held July 14 in Los Angeles and televised live on ESPN at 9 p.m. and hosted by Saturday Night Live's Seth Meyers.
