Steelers' Leftwich likely to miss Bucs game

leftwich. When the Steelers come to Raymond James Stadium to play the Bucs on Sept. 26 (the third week of the NFL season), they'll already be without starting QB Ben Roethlisberger, who will still be serving his suspension for his offseason shenanigans. Now it appears they might be without the guy who was supposed to fill in for Big Ben. Byron Leftwich probably won't be ready to play against the Bucs after suffering a knee injury in Pittsburgh's final preseason game Thursday night. You can read about it by clicking here. The former Bucs quarterback was supposed to fill the gap while Roethlisberg is out. Unless the Steelers pick up another quarterback, they're likely to go with either 13-year veteran Charlie Batch, who has 50 NFL starts, or third-year QB Dennis Dixon, who has one career start. Dixon looked impressive early in training camp, but played poorly in the third preseason game, which is considered the most informative preseason game because the starters get so much playing time. The guess is Dixon will be the starter, but Pittsburgh Post-Gazette columnist Ron Cook makes his push for Batch here.
