Sports analysis, perspective and more.

Three things that popped into my head

cano.1. Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano is not only the best player on the Yankees, but he just might be the best player in the American League. And when was the last time a second baseman was in the conversation as the best player in the American League? Seriously, you might have to go back to the early 1900s when the A's Nap Lajoie was considered to clearly be the best player in the American League. Only four second basemen have ever won AL MVP awards: the Tigers' Charlie Gehringer in 1937, the Yankees' Joe Gordon in 1942, the White Sox Nellie Fox in 1959 and Boston's Dustin Pedroia in 2008. Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera might win the MVP this year, but if I was starting a team made up from American League players, Cano would be my first pick.

2. Emmitt Smith is apologizing profusely for leaving the Gators out of his Pro Football Hall of Fame speech and he's built up enough good will over the years that he probably deserves the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it really was just a case of getting caught up in the moment. But he has known for months that was going into the Hall and you would think that he would've at least jotted down a few ideas during that time. It just seems hard to believe that he would unintentionally forget his time in Gainesville.

3. I received several e-mails this morning blaming Rays hitting coach Derek Shelton for the Rays' hitting woes and Sunday's near no-hitter by Toronto's Brandon Morrow. The only thing more absurd than blaming Shelton is blaming Louisville Slugger and whoever else makes the Rays' bats.
