Yankees fans try to derail signing of Cliff Lee
The New York Yankees figure to be one of the leading candidates to sign prized free-agent pitcher Cliff Lee in the offseason. They have plenty of blank checks lying around and their trump card might be that Yankees ace CC Sabathia and Lee are best buddies. But leave to a few blockhead Yankees fans to throw water -- or, in this case, beer -- on the situation. Word now is that Lee's wife, Kristen, was a target of taunts and worse during the ALCS. While sitting in the family section at Yankee Stadium, Kristen Lee said she was the subject of taunts, obscenities, that fans threw beer at her section and some even spit. You can read about it here and here.
Kristen Lee was quoted as saying, "The fans did not do good things in my heart. When people are staring at you, and saying horrible things, it's hard not to take it personal."
Lee's agent apparently told ESPNNewYork.com that the incident didn't change how the Lees look at New York, but, of course, Lee's agent is going to say that. Rule No. 1 for an agent: let every team know that every team is an option. That's how you drive up the price. It would make no sense for Lee's agent to say the Yankees are out of the picture. But you have to wonder if the Lees will think about what happened when it's time to sign this winter.
