Wake up and good morning. The state-run Citizens Property Insurance business has never been a favorite with Floridians, though it came in handy in the early days -- post Hurricane Andrew -- when private insurance essentially fled the state. The trick, of course, is that Florida may end up shooting itself in the foot when people learn (including all those Baby Boomers supposedly coming our way in the coming years) that homeowner insurance payments could rival mortgage payments. Draconian spikes in property insurance are a sure-fire way to destroy the struggling comeback of the Florida housing market.

I mention this not to harp anew on Citizens. I'm going to let South Florida folk song writer/singer Kevin Roth, 54, do the yodeling on this one. Roth penned a protest song about Citizens -- which he wants renamed CitiSINS -- to protest the rate hikes. He also singles out Gov. Scott with a big Thank You for his pushing Citizens to become even more expensive.

Scott's spokesman responded to the Roth song in this Palm Beach Post story saying Scott inherited the Citizens problem and is trying to fix the market. But raising the cost of mandatory coverage is hardly groundbreaking leadership and, in fact, grates against Scott's priority of recruiting businesses to Florida and creating jobs. As it becomes better known that property insurance is set to soar again, businesses will think twice of entering the Sunshine State.

Citizens hardly helps itself. Floridians filed a class action lawsuit against the insurer this month claiming Citizens routinely overvalues properties it insures in order to raise premiums. Read more here.
