At DTCC's 5-year anniversary in Tampa, enthusiasm and personalized serenade

I try to tread lightly when writing about Depository Trust & Clearing Corp. The name itself sends shivers through most readers who figure it is back room, data processing and financial (digital) paper shuffling. Yawn. And you would be right. DTCC is very good at what it does, but it is specialized processing.

DondonahueceoDTCCskipo'rourke I wrote this column earlier this week, though, about DTCC's 5-year anniversary of its Tampa Southern Business Center.(Photo, left, DTCC CEO Don Donahue.) It was created when Manhattan-based  DTCC, which clears and settles Wall Street securities trades, wanted to decentralize so that another possible 9/11 attack would not ruin the firm or cripple Wall Street.

DTCC2005openinginTampaAt this past Wednesday's celebration at DTCC's shop here at its secure facility out past I-75 off Bruce B Downs, there was an extraordinarily enthusiastic and diverse workforce. Note the photo above (by Skip O'Rourke, St.  Petersburg Times) of all the workers wearing yellow tee shirts saying Walking on Sunshine. (At right is the photo of DTCC's opening in Tampa in 2005 when the workers wore orange tee shirts.) Part of the festivities was one heck of a choir, the Southern Sounds of DTCC. They started a bland version of the Beatles song Here Comes the Sun-- the theme song when DTCC first got here 5 years ago -- then, on purpose, shrugged it off and did a rockin' version of -- what else? -- Walking on Sunshine.

Best of all they wrote their own lyrics, which are about the DTCC workers who relocated here from New York City. I offer the lyrics here for your amusement.

Walking’ on Sunshine

(Lyrics adapted for DTCC 5-year celebration)

Aw! Oh yeah

I used to lived up North where the buildings reached up to the sky
Ride the subway or ferry or hail a yellow cab passing by
I’d run to catch the 6:23 and have to stand all the way
Just a dreamin’ of moving down south to the sweet Tampa Bay

Now, I’m walking on sunshine, wa oh
I’m walking on sunshine, wa oh
I’m walking on sunshine, wa oh oh
and don’t it feel good?

Hey!
Alright now
and don’t it feel good?
Hey ----yeah

I used to be frightened by the thunder, lightning and rain
Or the mighty southern winds a blowing just call them by name
But I quickly realized that there was nothing (pause)
Nothing to fear – no-no-no
Now it’s Beaches, Palm trees, Daiquiri’s & Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Whoa! Yeah, Yeah

I’m walking on sunshine, wa oh
I’m walking on sunshine, wa oh
I’m walking on sunshine, wa oh oh
and don’t it feel good?

Hey!
Alright now
and don’t it feel good?
yeah, oh yeah now
Ain't it time to feel good?

(guitar solo)

 I’m walking on sunshine
 I’m walking on sunshine

I feel alive, I feel the sun, I feel the love that's really real
I feel alive, I feel the sun, I feel the love that's really real

I'm on sunshine baby oh, oh yeah
I'm on sunshine baby oh

I'm walking on in sunshine, wa oh
I'm walking on in sunshine, wa oh
I'm walking on in sunshine, wa oh oh
