Florida, Tampa Bay jobless numbers soar, but other states have it worse

July

NojobalanstevensonIT5 So Florida's unemployment rate soars statewide, again, to 10.6 percent while Tampa Bay's roars even higher to 11.1 percent -- 11.1 percent!

Here's a little extra context, courtesy of the Economic Policy Institute. The message for Florida? We could be doing a lot worse. Consider:

In descending order, here are the most-affected states in each category. Notice how Florida (FL) appears in all three categories:

1) 16 states with double-digit unemployment (11 states plus D.C. are higher than Florida):
MI, RI, OR, SC, NV, CA, OH, NC, DC, KY, TN, IN, FL, AL, IL, GA

2) 10 states with largest increase in unemployment since the start of the recession (eight states have higher numbers than Florida)
MI, OR, NV, RI, AL, SC, IN, NC, FL, CA

3) 10 states with largest share of jobs lost in the recession so far (three states have larger shares of jobs lost than Florida)
MI, AZ, NV, FL, OR, GA, ID, CA, OH, IN
