Henry Falcon: Sweetbay's Plant City store manager grabs national retail prize

Henry Falcon, manager of the Sweetbay Supermarket in Plant City, was named a grand finalist this week in the Food Marketing Institute's 10th annual store manager awards in Dallas. Falcon won in the category for companies with 50 to 199 stores.

Here he is (center, in short sleeves) Wednesday afternoon holding his FMI award surrounded by his team of Sweetbay associates who came out to Tampa International Airportto welcome him as he arrived back from FMI's annual conference in Dallas. Hey, we like it when some unsung business heroes get this kind of attention for doing a better job. Finalists were selected based on stories submitted from their supervisors or store associates. Falcon was nominated for providing "great customer service" and for increasing his store's comparable sales by 25 percent in the past year. He was also recognized for developing highly trained employees, whose service excellence performance scores exceeded the company average in all 28 categories.

In 2000, Falcon was awarded the Florida Retail Federation's 2000 Retailer of the Year Award for Leadership. He was then the manager for the Kash n' Karry in Plant City, now known as Sweetbay.

Sweetbay, based in Tampa, also volunteered that Falcon is a frequent winner of company awards, is widely recognized in Plant City and, best of all, is best known for his "contagious laugh." Congrats, Henry.
