March

With Jackson Laboratory in the news as the Maine-based biotech firm that's agreed -- after multiple counties vied for its attention with millions in incentives -- to expand to Sarasota County, economic development by building "industry clusters" is back in the news this week.

The city of St. Petersburg's conducted its own series of industry cluster summits and job creation tied to those types of businesses (marine science; medical technology and services; information technology; manufacturing; arts, culture, events and tourism, and finally financial services). The last summit, focused on financial services, takes place tomorrow (Tuesday, March 8) from 10 am to noon at the Franklin Templeton Carillon  Auditorium (100 Fountain Parkway, St. Petersburg). (Interested business representatives and members of the community are invited to participate by responding to the city's Jon Fleming, 727-892-5288 or jon.fleming@stpete.org.) Leaders representing Raymond James, Bank of America, RBC Wealth Management, Transamerica Financial Services, Modern Business Associates and others will discuss how the financial sector can be strengthened. Here's the city web site and here are more details.

If health services and human performance on the regional level is more your cup of tea, another industry cluster conversation dedicated to that topic takes place Wednesday event, March 9, at the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg. it's part of the Walgreens Bayside Business Forum series conducted with the USF St. Pete College of Business. This event features Tampa Bay Partnership business intelligence officer Dave Sobush. The forum runs from 6 to 8 pm at USF St. Petersburg, 140 7th Ave S., in Davis Hall, Room 130. The forum is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, so reservations are requested. To RSVP, please call (727) 873-4992 or e-mail bbf@stpete.usf.edu by today -- Monday, March 8. Here are more details.
