In latest health ratings, 16% of Florida banks receive weakest ratings on 0-5 scale
Wake up and good morning. New ratings are out assessing the health of 267 Florida-based banks and, as expected, the numbers are not encouraging. Forty-three banks are rated "zero" -- zero being the worst on a financial health scale of 0 to 5 -- as of June 30 (the second quarter) by Bauer Financial. A zero rating does not mean these banks are doomed to fail. But it does mean they are severely underperforming, probably in trouble with bank regulators and surely in need of raising new capital. All that makes for a difficult road to recovery in this recession and in a climate where bank examiners are being extra tough on Florida banks because of the depth of the state recession and ongoing decline in real estate values. Since the start of 2010, 22 Florida banks have failed. Here's the FDIC's complete failure list.
And here's the regional breakdown of zero-rated banks:
Hillsborough County: Has five zero-rated banks, up from four in the earlier quarter. They are First Commercial Bank of Tampa Bay, Progress Bank, Southern Commerce Bank, Southshore Community Bank and this newcomer to the list: Superior Bank.
Pinellas County: Old Harbor Bank.
Hernando County: Cortez Community Bank.
Manatee County: Horizon Bank. (For an inside look at how Horizon is trying to make a comeback, read this recent story about its CEO, Charlie Conoley, who is not going down without a fight and just might pull the bank back from the brink.)
