New data: 20 Florida banks get top ratings but 44 still tagged as weakest



thermometer.Wake up and good morning. If we measure the health of Florida by its banks, we're surely not making much headway. The latest quarterly bank ratings from Bauer Financial -- note the "latest" means these figures are for the fourth quarter of 2010 -- show 44 Florida banks are rated "Zero star" or greatly troubled.

In other words, despite all the banks already seized and "failed" by bank regulators over the past two years, there are plenty still ailing out there in this state. Some of those 44 will fail or be bought by other banks this year.

Bauer rates banks' health on a scale of Zero to Five stars, weakest to strongest.

There are 20 "Five star" banks noted below, though only one (in boldface) is in the Tampa Bay area (a few that had been "Five stars" here have slipped). These are the strongest:

Bank of the South: Pensacola

Community Southern Bank: Lakeland

Drummond Community Bank: Chiefland

First Colony Bank of Florida: Maitland

First Federal Bank of Florida: Lake City

First Navy Bank: Pensacola

FirstAtlantic Bank: Jacksonville

Florida Shores Bank - Southwest: Venice

Intercontinental Bank: West Miami

Intracoastal Bank: Palm Coast

New Traditions National Bank: Orlando

Palm Beach Community Bank: Boynton Beach

Prime Meridian Bank: Tallahassee
