Tampa International Airport's
rated pretty high in most rankings of airports, so J.D. Power's new North America Airport Satisfaction Study only adds to TIA's kudos. The airport ranked No. 3 among mid-sized airports, behind top ranked Kansas City International and No. 2 Portland International. Says J.D Power:

"Tampa performs particularly well in the terminal facilities and baggage claim factors."

Tampa International got top marks in overall satisfaction and 4 out of 5 marks in accessibility, check-in and security. In the medium size category, Boston's Logan and New York's LaGuardia airports had the lowest ratings. Here are the complete rankings for mid-sized airports. Among the largest airports, the top ranked were Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County, while Denver International and Minneapolis/St. Paul International tied. Orlando also did well. Here are the big airport rankings.

And here are the small airport rankings which include three in Florida. Here's the complete J.D. Power news release.

Notably, the higher the satisfaction in the airport, the more a passenger is likely to spend there. Says the study:

"The study finds that providing high levels of airport passenger satisfaction has a strong positive impact on retail spending. Among passengers who are 'disappointed' with their airport experience (providing ratings of one to five on a 10-point scale), airport retail spending averages $14.12. However, passengers who are 'delighted' with their airport experience (providing ratings of 10 on a 10-point scale), spend an average of $20.55 on airport retail purchases - 45 percent more than do 'disappointed' passengers. Only a small percentage of passengers -9 percent - are 'delighted' with their airport experience."
