Tampa ranks tops among large Florida metro areas, 8th nationwide, for high personal debt

Tampa Bay's average debt per consumer is $25,603, making it tops among Florida's major metro areas and No. 8 nationwide among the nation's top 20 metros. So says Experian, which released its findings today on average debt per consumer in the top 20 major U.S. metropolitan areas. About 65 percent of the 20 exceeded the national average consumer debt, which was $24,775 in March.

Among the top 20 major U.S. metro areas, Seattle is the most debt-burdened city, coming in at almost $2,000 above the national average debt per consumer. Los Angeles has the lowest average debt. Here are the top eight metro areas based on their average debt per consumer:

1. Seattle: $26,646.
2. Dallas: $26,599.
3. Denver: $26,428.
