Tampa's Verizon regional president Michelle Robinson featured in Working Mother magazine special report

Michellerobinsonverizonmartharial Michelle Robinson, Verizon's southeast region president in Tampa, gets some personal attention in the new June/July issue of Working Mother magazine in its special report on "2009 Best Companies for Multicultural Women."

On page 76, Robinson appears in a photo with husband John and young sons John and Ethan. "Today," states Working Mother, "26 percent of its (Verizon's) new hires are women of color, as are 15 percent of its top earners."

I spent some time recently with Robinson at Verizon's Temple Terrace HQ for its FiOS fiber optic cable TV system. (The photo, by Martha Rial of the St. Petersburg Times, shows Robinson at the facility where they monitor TV quality.) Robinson's a big pusher of technology and broadband services as supplements to Florida's public education system. She's also very watchful as a mother of two youngsters of the type and quality of the educational atmosphere available in the Tampa Bay area.

Verizon's been named to Working Mother magazine's list of Best Companies for Multicultural Women for  four years in a row. The list provides an in-depth look at companies that increasingly benefit from the talents of multicultural women in the workplace. The 2009 "best of" list found that the selected companies offer diversity and sensitivity training; formal mentoring. In addition, 90 percent maintain a database of multicultural women vendors and consultants; 85 percent use outside recruiters to find multicultural women candidates, and 60 percent offer retention programs targeting multicultural women.
