USF St. Pete starts search for business dean
In a blow to some promising momentum at the University of South Florida College of Business in St. Petersburg, dean Geralyn McClure Franklin has resigned. She will return to her Texas roots and take the position of dean of the University of Dallas business school on June 1. No interim dean will be named to replace Franklin as USF St. Petersburg hopes to expedite its search for and selection of a new business dean.
Franklin, in an email, clarified her status to me: "I will be at USF St. Petersburg until early May. My exact departure date is still undetermined, but I will be here at least until May 8. Our SACS (Southern Association of College and Schools, an accreditation organization) visit is May 5 and 6, so I want to be here then."
News of Franklin's leaving came in a letter distributed to USF faculty from Norine Noonan, regional vice chancellor for academic affairs:
"Geralyn will be a hard act to follow. Her new post at the University of Dallas will again put her 'front and center' in that institution's pursuit of AACSB International initial accreditation, and it brings her home to her beloved state of Texas. Her faculty colleagues, I know, will miss her thoughtful leadership and fierce advocacy on their behalf. Her decanal colleagues and I will miss her good humor and her true team spirit that was always focused on the betterment of USFSP."
USF St. Petersburg said it's starting a search for Franklin's successor. "We hope to have the search committee constituted and the position announcement completed and 'on the street' within the next week," Noonan stated, adding:
"I believe the institution is in an excellent position to recruit an outstanding new leader for the College of Business who will continue the remarkable progress that the College has made."
Franklin arrived here in the summer of 2006 from her job as dean of the School of Business at The University of Texas of the Permian Basin. Her appointment here was intended to help soothe bad feelings left over from the university's dismissal in 2005 of Ron Hill, the founding dean of USF's College of Business in St. Petersburg. Hill was well liked by the St. Petersburg business community, which challenged Hill's being relieved of his title. Hill has moved on and is a professor at Villanova's School of Business in Pennsylvania.
Franklin guided USF St. Pete's College of Business through its first separate accreditation review in both business and accounting. She starts her new job at the University of Dallas, a Catholic university, in June. (Photo by Melissa Lyttle of the St. Petersburg Times.)
