PS3 Rumors Are Awesome

There's some big PlayStation3 news this week -- unless it's just big PS3 rumors. Some scans of a purported PSM magazine article have leaked describing Sony's otherwise-under-wraps online strategy for the PS3.

Not only is Sony allegedly ready to give gamers an online service to rival Xbox Live, but this scan (via Joystiq) claims that the company also wants the console to be a digital video recorder and movie/TV show downloader, and serve as a Location Free station so you can watch DVDs and videos on a PSP. Engadget gives some reasons to be skeptical here, not least of which is no bundled hard drive with the PS3. And it's hard to believe that nothing would have leaked from all the negotiations that would need to go on for the PS3 to be a DVR and have a movie downloading service.

But if any of that is true, it would be huge. A true online service; an online music/movie/TV store; next-gen DVD player; and DVR: now that's real entertainment convergence. And if the story is bogus, it at least gives Sony and Microsoft something to shoot for in the next round of console wars.
