So a lot of people don't like the new name for the Nintendo Revolution, apparently. But seriously, get a grip. It doesn't even matter. It's all just marketing and spin. "Wii" doesn't make or break the console. The only thing that matters is getting people to know it's there. Gamers already do, and you can be sure Nintendo has a good marketing campaign ready to go so other people know too. The system is being sold as a non-gamer's gaming machine, and giving it a non-gaming name is just a part of that.
Plus why is everyone suddenly 8 years old? Read 1up's
roundup of opinions on Wii, and half of them make a pee joke. When was the last time you said "wee" (I don't even know how to spell it)? When was the last time you even thought about it? "I have to pee." "I'm-a take a piss" (as Vincent Vega said in Pulp Fiction). "I have to go to the bathroom." But wee? Come off it.
Anyways, Chris Kohler has a nice defense of Wii
here.

Fanboyism. I will never understand its mysterious criteria for acceptance.
Honestly, I think this is the best console name I've heard in years, if not ever. I only found out about it half an hour ago and I'm already used to it. Everything Nintendo says in their press release, I can appreciate and agree with; likewise Chris Kohler's (typically) brilliant and logical defense.
Wii has such an obvious name, it's going to be impossible to forget it. It's short, and stands out; it's short, and snappy; it's short, and still original, that holy grail of marketing.
I can't think of any other console that's ever had such a clear, marketable name. When you actually think about console names, every single one is awful. "Gamecube" - wtf? A cube for games? You're supposed to name it, not describe it! The same holds for "Playstation", and as for X-Box... I think "ooh, X is cool!" is more immature than all the wee-jokes currently floating around on this name.
Even further back (and I'm going into dangerous territory, messing with nostalgia)... is "Master System" really that clever? Or is it the summary of teenage angst and need for superiority? "Super Nintendo Entertainment System" is back to be a description, not a name - infact, I'd argue that every Nintendo home console up until this point has merely been described.
So here's to Nintendo, for finally choosing a name that's a name.

After the initial shock of "Wii" I've come to accept it. Mostly because it's true, the name doesn't matter. I've usually just referred to the machine as Nintendo regardless of if it was the 64 or Gamecube. I'm still excited about the new Nintendo Wiiand all of the fresh new gameplay it could bring to the next gen. You gotta admit, Super Smash Bros. Wii has a cool ring to it.
