Whose Blu-ray PS3 drive will break first?

Check out this comment on a recent post. Ed makes a very interesting and important comment about the PlayStation 3:

Another problem that I have with the BR idea is the PS2 DVD player. It was terrible. I'd like to know if anyone still has a PS2 that they bought on the original release where the DVD function still works. My first PS2 quit reading DVDs about a year after I bought it, my 2nd one didn't last much longer. I know other people who have had the same problem.

Not only is Sony forcing you to spend an extra $200 for a new technology you may or may not want. They're forcing you to spend an extra $200 for a first-generation version of that new technology. Yeah, compared to the $1,000 or whatever it'll cost for a standalone Blu-ray player, $200 is a bargain. But it's still brand-new, untested, first-generation technology that's being foisted on you.
