TAMPA — A deputy shot and wounded a 17-year-old during an encounter that took place Tuesday night off Skipper Road, said Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister.

The 17-year-old, whose name was not released, was hospitalized and reported to be in critical condition, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

"The deputy and the suspect got into some type of encounter," Chronister said, "at which time the deputy deployed deadly force."

Deputy Daniel Estanislau, 26, was not injured, the Sheriff's Office said.

The incident took place just before 7:45 p.m. Deputies received two domestic violence-related calls from the Jasmine Terrace Apartments at 1250 Skipper Road, the sheriff said.

One caller said a family member was bleeding. A second caller said a family member was bleeding and had been "knocked out," Chronsiter said.

The deputy arrived within five minutes and spotted a male who matched the description from those domestic violence incidents walking away from the apartment complex on Skipper Road. Chronister did not provide more details about what ensued or why the deputy opened fire, saying the investigation is still in a preliminary stage.

No other firearm or weapons have yet been recovered from the scene, the sheriff said.

Investigators were working two crime scenes connected to this incident.

There were two women who were victims in the domestic violence incidents. One suffered a laceration to her head. The Sheriff's Office did not release their names because of its interpretation of a new state constitutional amendment known as Marsy's Law.

Estanislau has worked for the Sheriff's Office since October 2015. He received a letter of counseling in April 2017 after being involved in a traffic crash.
