Joe Childs is the Times’ senior editor/at large. He continues to direct and produce investigative work, direct strategic  projects across the company, and coach the news staff. Previously, he has led strategic teams that reorganized parts of the newsroom and introduced content initiatives.
A Times editor since 1980, he has worked as an assignment editor, city editor and, for six years, was sports editor, supervising coverage of Tampa Bay’s six-year pursuit of a Major League Baseball franchise. He left sports in 1993 to become managing editor in the Clearwater bureau, where he also began supervising the Times’ coverage of the Church of Scientology.
Childs grew up in Kansas and graduated from the University of Kansas. He worked as local news reporter in Kansas City for four years. In 1976, he moved to Florida, joining the reporting staff of the Times’ sister paper, the Evening Independent, where he covered municipal and state government, local and state politics, did investigative work and wrote a local column. In 1980, he joined the Times, as assistant city editor.
He and his wife Beverly live in Dunedin.
