Jim Nabors, the 82-year-old former star of 1960s sitcom Gomer Pyle, USMC, apparently bit the bullet and married his partner of 38 years, Hawaii News Now reports exclusively. Do we say it? We'll have to say it: Well surpriiiiiise, surprise, surprise!
Nabors and Stan Cadwallader got hitched in Seattle on Jan. 15, the actor told HNN. He said the marriage was long overdue: "It's pretty obvious that we had no rights as a couple, yet when you've been together 38 years, I think something's got to happen there, you've got to solidify something. And at my age, it's probably the best thing to do."
The couple, who have lived in Hawaii for decades, went to Washington state because gay marriage became legal in December. They performed the ceremony at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel. Nabors has no plans to get involved in the debate over gay marriage, but was proud to marry Cadwallader, whom he met in Honolulu in 1975.
"I'm 82 and he's in his 60s and so we've been together for 38 years and I'm not ashamed of people knowing, it's just that it was such a personal thing, I didn't tell anybody," Nabors said. "I'm very happy that I've had a partner of 38 years and I feel very blessed. And, what can I tell you, I'm just very happy."
We wonder if Andy Griffith would have attended if he were invited.
