Diamondbacks draft USF closer Tommy Eveld

USF redshirt junior closer Tommy Eveld, a Jesuit High alumnus who bypassed baseball for a half-decade in favor of football, was picked Friday by the Diamondbacks in the ninth round of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft.

The slot value for the pick (No. 269 overall) is $168,100, according to mlb.com. Eveld is expected to sign with the club.

"It's exciting," said Eveld, a former Jesuit quarterback and USF football walk-on who has survived two ACL surgeries. "It means everything to get to pursue my once-lost childhood dream of winning a World Series and being a professional athlete."

Until throwing an exploratory bullpen for USF coaches in January 2015, Eveld hadn't pitched in an organized game since 10th grade, when he played in the Citrus Park Little League. This past season, he posted a 2.21 ERA with nine saves, striking out 67 and walking 24 in 53 innings. His fastball can hit the upper 90s.

Earlier Friday, Bulls signee Tobias Myers of Winter Haven High was selected by the Orioles in the sixth round (181st overall). A 6-foot-2 right-handed pitcher, Myers (8-2, 1.51 ERA in 2016) struck out 79 in 69.2 innings this past season and didn't allow a home run.

He told The Ledger of Lakeland he'll bypass school and sign with Baltimore.

Bulls junior starting RHP Brandon Lawson (5-5, 2.50 ERA) -- a Hernando High alumnus -- remained on the board early Friday evening. So did senior C Levi Borders, a 2015 unanimous All-American Athletic Conference pick who missed all except 16 games with a bacterial infection this past season.

Borders is eligible for an NCAA hardship waiver because he didn't play in more than 30 percent of USF's games this year.
