5 things to do under $5: Free Florida Orchestra holiday show, snow play in Largo, free ferry rides

1Free Florida Orchestra concert: We normally struggle to shut out holiday music at the malls this time of year (Paul McCartney's Wonderful Christmastime making us want to wear earmuffs). But on Saturday, shoppers at Westfield Citrus Park in Tampa will get a free performance by the Florida Orchestra. Director Michael Francis will be the very merry host and conductor, with members of the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay helping in selections from The Nutcracker, Sleigh Ride, White Christmas, Feliz Navidad and an old-fashioned sing-along. The hourlong concert near Dillard's starts at 6:30 p.m. at 8021 Citrus Park Town Center.

2Snow play: The festivities in Largo Central Park get kicked up a notch Saturday with live music by the high-energy, 10-piece horn-driven band Late Night Brass, a snow play area and snow slide ($5). The park is already impressive with 2 million LED lights, and new this year is a carousel and a seven-story Ferris wheel, which will run nightly through Jan. 2 for $5 per ride. The fun starts at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at 101 Central Park Drive.

3Free Ferry Rides: If you haven't checked out the new Cross-Bay Ferry you can test the waters on Sunday when the usually $10 trip will be free. The 50-minute ride across Tampa Bay between downtown St. Petersburg and the Tampa Convention Center is sponsored by Frontier Communications. The rides are first-come, first-served and cannot be reserved in advance. crossbayferry.com for departure times 7 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Sunday.

4Best Trick Contest: Skate Park of Tampa invites skaters to bring their board and their A-game to compete for "best trick." It's $1 to enter at noon Saturday at Ross Norton Recreation and Aquatic Complex, 1426 S Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., Clearwater. (813) 621-6793.

5Gullwing: The Tampa-based experimental rock band will put on a free show at Microgroove Records that will be a special all-instrumental, space/ethereal-rock show. They will be joined Friday night by fellow Florida bands Luckily I'm the Hunter and Thoth. The music starts at 7 p.m. Microgroove Records, 4906 N Florida Ave., Tampa. (813) 667-7089.

Jobsite’s ‘The Tempest’ balances reverence and irreverence in a busy Shakespeare tribute

TAMPA — The Tempest begins with shadow play, a ship tossed on high seas. Projected onto a backdrop, the shadow of that ship looks proportionate to the waves that rock it. You see this, even as a daemonic spirit holds a toy replica in her hand, the ac...
