Clearly Talented: Art Glass Weekend

Between the Chihuly Collection, the new Imagine Museum and the Duncan McClellan Gallery, as well as the hot shops and glass studios around, St. Petersburg is rich with stellar examples of art glass. This weekend, Duncan McClellan brings two more acclaimed glass artists to his gallery. Asheville, N.C.-based Alex Bernstein will show a collection of his stunning cast and carved sculptures, pictured at right, in an exhibition called With the Flow. The opening reception is 5-9 p.m. Saturday, where Los Angeles-based artist Kazuki Takizawa will give a glassblowing demonstration from 6:15-8 p.m., at 2342 Emerson Ave. S. Free. dmglass.com.

On Sunday, Takizawa returns to the gallery for another free glassblowing demonstration from noon to 1 p.m. Guests are then invited to join McClellan, Bernstein and Takizawa at 1:30 p.m. for brunch at the Museum of Fine Arts (255 Beach Drive NE, St. Petersburg), followed by a talk from Bernstein from 3-4 p.m. He will discuss his life, work and inspiration. It’s included with museum admission, and brunch items are a la carte.

Seasons Change: New Exhibits at Tampa Museum of Art

Spring is on the horizon, bringing birds, flowers and baseball, themes found in two new exhibits at the Tampa Museum of Art.

First at bat is Having a Ball: George Sosnak’s Striking Portraits from America’s Pastime. Sosnak was a well-known folk art painter of baseball, a game of which he was a passionate fan. He even worked as a Minor League umpire. His meticulously detailed baseballs, pictured left, are sure to delight both sports fan and art appreciators. It’s open now and remains on display through July 22.

Opening Friday, Inspired by Nature: Vases, Birds, & Flowers, explores the ways artists have found inspiration from the natural world throughout history. Drawn primarily from the museum’s permanent collection, the exhibit includes examples of Art Nouveau as well as complex representations from contemporary artists, in both 2D and 3D. It also remains on display through July 22. 120 W Gasparilla Plaza. tampamuseum.org.
