The smells of barbecue sauce and spray paint filled Keith Humphrey's St. Petersburg driveway Sunday morning as he and his friends put the finishing touches on a homemade float designed to look like a giant human brain.
In two weeks, the friends will launch the float off a pier at Miami's Bayfront Park and hope the man-powered contraption will fly a few dozen feet before it crashes into the water. The crew will be decked out in barbecue sauce-spattered zombie outfits, complete with professional make-up jobs, inspired by AMC's television series "The Walking Dead."
Humphrey, his twin brother Kevin, and friends David West, Chris Elmore and Kevin Riley, all of Tampa and St. Pete, will be one of more than a hundred teams competing in National Red Bull Flugtag Day in five cities across the country.
All teams choose one pilot to ride on their contraptions. The other team members give the machines a running start, pushing them along a 30-foot ramp before letting them fly across the water. Celebrity judges will rate launches on distance traveled as well as creativity and showmanship. The first place prize is a skydiving trip with the Red Bull Air Force team.
