Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder (Algonquin), by Richard Louv, is an updated edition of the bestseller that sparked a "No Child Left Inside" grass roots initiative in 27 states to bring back free-range childhood.
The Mountains of California (Penguin Classics), by John Muir, first published in 1894, was the first book by one of the forefathers of the environmental movement, and its deeply felt, poetic evocation of the wild beauty of the Sierra Madres still sings.
A Wild Life: Adventures of an Accidental Conservationist in Africa (Lyons Press), by Dick Pitman, is a memoir by a British ex-pat who moved to Zimbabwe and stumbled on his life's work: saving such creatures as elephants, rhinos and cheetahs from habitat loss and other threats.
