Notable

Mothers in wartime

Two new books reflect the experiences of mothers whose children served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Boots on the Ground by Dusk: My Tribute to Pat Tillman (Modern Times), by Mary Tillman and Narda Zacchino, is a fierce and furious memoir by the mother of the NFL star who volunteered to serve after 9/11 — and whose death by "friendly fire" in Afghanistan was covered up by the U.S. government.

The Warrior: A Mother's Story of a Son at War (Viking), by Frances Richey, is a memoir in verse by a poet whose son is a Green Beret, written during his two deployments in Iraq and filled with fear, heartache, pride and love.
