Burrow Press and Saw Palm: Florida Literature and Art will host Sticks of Fire: A Literary Celebration of Florida and Tampa Bay, a release party for two publications, 15 Views Volume II: Corridor, a book of linked stories by local writers about Tampa Bay and Orlando, and Saw Palm, the literary review of the University of South Florida. The event will feature live music, a Florida-themed costume contest and readings by Karen Brown, Rita Ciresi, Hunt Hawkins, Jay Hopler, Peter Meinke, Mary Jo Melone, Darrell Nicholson, Katherine Riegel, Enid Shomer, Ira Sukrungruang and Alicia Thompson. It takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the Oxford Exchange, 420 W Kennedy Blvd., Tampa.
The University of South Florida Humanities Institute's annual science fiction seminar, this year titled "Science Fiction, Gender and 'the Other,' " presents authors and editors Jeff and Ann VanderMeer (The Weird: A Compendium of Strange and Dark Stories and Steampunk II: Steampunk Reloaded) reading from their work at 6 p.m. Tuesday and participating in a panel with USF professors Nancy White and Ednie Garrison at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Both events will be in Marshall Student Center 2709 on the USF campus, 4202 E Fowler Ave., Tampa.
