Events: Novelist Paul Lisicky to give talk in Tampa

City of Writers, an organization for Tampa Bay area writers, will hold a Web site launch party, with appearances by Peter Meinke, St. Petersburg's poet laureate, and other writers, at 6:20 p.m. Monday at the Studio@620, 620 First Ave. S, St. Petersburg.

The Honors Program at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg will present John Conroy (Unspeakable Acts, Ordinary People: The Dynamics of Torture) speaking on "The Making of a Torturer" at 7 p.m. Monday in Steidinger Auditorium at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, 100 Eighth Ave. SE.

The Writers at the University series at the University of Tampa presents a talk by novelist Paul Lisicky (Lawnboy) at 8 p.m. Monday in the Plant Hall Music Room on the campus, 401 W Kennedy Blvd., Tampa.

The East Lake Community Library Author's Showcase presents former Time-Life editor Molli Nickell with a talk on tips for writers at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the library, 4125 East Lake Road, Palm Harbor.

The Clearwater Main Library presents a Scholar's Choice lecture on Daphne du Maurier's Jamaica Inn led by Nancy Jane Tyson, associate professor of English at the University of South Florida, at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the library, 100 N Osceola Ave.

St. Petersburg Times columnist Ernest Hooper, along with Keith Berry and Paula Stahel, will celebrate the posthumous publication of A Century and Some Change: My Life Before the President Called My Name by Ann Cooper (Hooper's grandmother) at 6 p.m. Thursday at Inkwood Books, 216 S Armenia Ave., Tampa.

Author Connie May Fowler (Before Women Had Wings) will conduct a one-day novel writing seminar on March 27 at the University of Tampa. Tuition is $150 until Feb. 28, $160 after that date. For information and reservations, go to www.writing belowsealevel.com/.
