Three lavishly illustrated books focus on aircraft, golf and exploration — could one make a good Father's Day gift on June 20?

Bad Lies: A Field Guide to Lost Balls, Missing Links and Other Golf Mishaps (Little, Brown) by Charles Lindsay combines painfully funny photos and tongue-in-cheek captions meant to make the worst duffer feel less alone.

In the Cockpit: Inside History-Making Aircraft of World War II (Smithsonian), with a foreword by Robert A. Hoover, is a beautifully photographed, historically detailed book designed to put aircraft aficionados in the pilot's seat.

Race to the End: Amundsen, Scott and the Attainment of the South Pole (Sterling) by Ross D.E. McPhee tells that heroic, tragic story of exploration with hundreds of photos, maps, documents and more.
