These books offer fresh, fully illustrated takes on familiar forms and stories.

Alice in Tumblr-Land and Other Fairy Tales for a New Generation (Penguin) by Tim Manley compiles funny, modern (but not for kids) reimaginings, like the Ugly Duckling's discovery of Instagram and the Frog Prince's date with a PETA member.

Gris Grimly's Frankenstein: Assembled From the Original Text by Mary Shelley (Balzer + Bray) by Gris Grimly is a gorgeously gothic graphic version of the story of the tragic monster and his creator.

A Field Guide to Little-Known & Seldom-Seen Birds of North America (Peachtree Publishers) by Ben Sill, Cathryn Sill and John Sill is a hilarious spoof on birding guides with such species as the Long-range Target Duck (with circle patterns on its belly) and the Blunt-Billed Woodpecker (native to Petrified Forest).
