Frightening fiction

Get in the mood for Halloween with these nightmarish novels.

The Diviners (Little, Brown) by Libba Bray is the first in a new YA series by the bestselling author, a paranormal thriller set in New York City during the roaring '20s, with a killer on the loose and a young girl perhaps the only one who can catch him.

The White Forest (Touchstone) by Adam McOmber is a Victorian mystery set in London and on the wild moors, about a young woman with an unusual gift and a young man's disappearance after his association with a cult.

Zom-B (Little, Brown) by Darren Shan is first in an energetically grisly new series by the author of Cirque du Freak and other internationally bestselling YA series; this time, a girl named B learns the hard way that the zombies running around her school are not a prank.
