Soldiers' stories

These books take factual or fictional looks at soldiers' experiences in three wars.

The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor (Back Bay Books) by Jake Tapper is a gripping documentary account of the 2009 attack on U.S. troops at Combat Outpost Keating in Afghanistan, one of the deadliest battles of the war.

Shep's Army: Bummers, Blisters, & Boondoggles (Opus Books) by Jean Shepherd collects comic and caustic stories from World War II, many told on his radio show, by the author of A Christmas Story.

The Things They Carried (Mariner) by Tim O'Brien is the 1990 classic work about the Vietnam War. O'Brien will be the keynote speaker at Eckerd College's Writers in Paradise in January.
