Three new books focus on songs and songwriters.
Hollywood Foto-Rhetoric: The Lost Manuscript (Simon & Schuster), text by Bob Dylan, photos by Barry Feinstein, is a curious 1960s collaboration combining Feinstein's black-and-white show biz shots and Dylan's tone poems on the nature of celebrity and such stars as Steve McQueen, Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe.
Paul Simon: Lyrics 1964-2008 (Simon & Schuster), with a foreword by Chuck Close and introduction by David Remnick, is a big, handsome book that presents the body of work of one of the great wordsmiths of pop music.
The Pitchfork 500: Our Guide to the Greatest Songs From Punk to the Present (Pitchfork) rounds up the brash music criticism Web site's picks in indie rock, hip-hop, pop, metal, electronic and experimental music, with great sidebars like Robot Rock and Career Killers.
