What's Julie Solomon reading?

Julie Solomon, a rising junior at Northeast High School in St. Petersburg, helped the school seize the championship trophy in the district competition of Pinellas County's Battle of the Books. "I'm a huge reader, and I finish a book within just a few hours,'' Solomon, 16, said. "I read a lot and know a good book when I find one.''

What is on your nightstand?

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I like (it) because it's written in the perspective of death. I like stories that make me think. It definitely made me think. It was written about a time that all of us know about, but not many of us truly care to understand.

Do you think there's a time and a place for different styles of reading? Will you be reading lighter fare this summer?

I like all types of books — chick lit, young adult, thriller, fast-paced action novels, fantasy, sports, inspirational — basically everything. When it comes down to it, I really enjoyed it because it was just truly a good book.
