What is on your nightstand?
American Lion by Jon Meacham, 1776 by David McCullough, John Adams by David McCullough, Forerunners Courageous: The Stories of Frontier Florida by Leroy Collins, Cracker by Dana Ste. Claire, The Swamp by Michael Grunwald and A Land Remembered by Patrick Smith.
Which one stands out?
A Land Remembered. I was able to meet Patrick Smith's son in St. Augustine at the Florida Heritage Book Festival last year. I told a story about how my wife had a copy of Land Remembered around forever, and the cover of her old copy looked like a Harlequin romance. She tried to convince me it wasn't. I finally wised up and read it, and I couldn't put it down. He went home and told his dad, and (Patrick Smith) sent me an autographed copy that included the note, "This is not a 'romance novel' but it does have a love story.'' . . . I think every Floridian should read it.
