Cabot, who has more than 15 million books in print worldwide, is best known for her Princess Diaries series, from which Disney made two movies. We caught up with the Indiana native by phone from the 45th floor of the Marriott Marquis in Manhattan on June 20. She was taking part in the Romance Writers Association Convention. Cabot, who lives in Key West, released her newest novel, Overbite, this month.
What's on your nightstand?
A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. I never heard of the books before the TV show came on.
Are you enjoying it?
Yes. The TV series was so good, and I see it was faithful to the book, even down to the dialogue, but, of course, the book goes more into depth. I love empowered female characters and romance.
You've always had a certain literary devotion to romance, haven't you?
Yeah, there always has to be romance. And because when I read for pleasure, I need to stick to reading outside of my genre, right now I've also got a thriller, Sixkill by Robert B. Parker.
Seriously, you have written oodles of books, so when do you read for pleasure, in the middle of the night?
An hour before I go to bed, I have to read in the bathtub. I also love to read in our pool. My reading is always water based, so I have to say that's why I don't have a Kindle. I actually went online to look for a waterproof Kindle.
