Rick Baker is in his final year as mayor of St. Petersburg. Although he says he has not decided what he'll do next, he has been mentioned as a possible candidate for statewide office. He is the author of Mangroves to Major League, a history of St. Petersburg.
What is on your nightstand?
The Brutal Journey by Paul Schneider, Legacy of Leadership: Florida Governors and Their Inaugural Speeches by Patricia Lasche Clements and, although I rarely read a book twice, I just reread The Swamp: The Everglades, Florida, and the Politics of Paradise by Michael Grunwald. It's just a great history of the Everglades. The interesting part of Schneider's book, which is about a Spanish conquistador landing in this area in the 1500s, is that it includes Jungle Prada. I plan to update Mangroves to Major League to include Florida history, and these books have helped.
