Roger McGuinn, legendary frontman for the Byrds, took our phone call from a hotel in Memphis, where the 66-year-old was preparing his keynote speech for the 2009 International Folk Alliance. McGuinn, a former Indian Rocks Beach resident, lives in Orlando. In 1995, he launched a preservation project, the Folk Den, that can be found at www.mcguinn.com.
What is on your nightstand?
Killer View by Ridley Pearson. He's one of my favorite authors. I know him through my work with the Rock Bottom Remainders, along with Dave Barry, Amy Tan, Stephen King. I must disclose to you that he used me for technical information.
Was it musical information?
No. I gave him information on a radiation detector.
Now that's an answer I wasn't expecting. Where have you detected radiation?
I carry a Gamma-Scout when I travel, and certain parts of the country are hotter than others. Ridley knew I had it, and it was fun to read it in his book. It's a great book.
