Learn how to handle problems on the water, and more, in a boating skills and seamanship course that starts Jan. 7.

RUSKIN

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer a boating skills and seamanship course from 7 to 9 p.m. once a week from Jan. 7 to April 8 at the Banquet Room at Sunset Grill, 611 Destiny Drive.

The course is for entry-level and experienced recreational boaters. Topics include types of boats, federally required boating equipment like flares and signaling devices, trailered boats, weather and handling different conditions such as rough seas or high winds, navigation and rules of the nautical road, boating safety and Florida boating laws, how to maintain boat engines, lines and knots, and how to work the boat's radio.

There will be a test with each chapter. Makeup tests will be offered April 8. Participants can also take a test to receive a Florida boating education ID card.
