With the Tampa Bay area's unemployment reaching its highest point in five years, there's comfort for consumers experiencing financial hardship.
Local utilities provide energy assistance for families facing crisis. Depending on the company, assistance is available to those who suffer "unexpected unemployment" or sudden illness, those with temporary disabilities, families that have suffered an unavoidable, unpredictable emergency, and seniors.
So if you've lost your job, know that all is not lost.
Progress Energy's Energy Neighbor Fund and TECO Energy's Share Program provide assistance through local nonprofit agencies. You'll have to check with the agencies about application requirements.
For those a bit more flush with cash, you can make a tax-deductible donation to the fund.
And with the summer heat rolling around (not to mention an $8 fuel fee hike coming to your Progress Energy bill this summer), here are a few tips for saving electricity:
• Set your thermostat between 78 and 80 degrees.
• Close drapes, blinds and shades in the hottest part of the day.
• Use ceiling and portable fans to keep air moving.
• Cook using the microwave or countertop appliances instead of the stove or oven.
