Ikea's Dimpa. The generously proportioned, 17-inch polypropylene bag is available in several cool prints and colors. It folds flat, wipes clean and is good for stacking products. $1.50 at Ikea stores; not available online.

Best for large families

Pack-N-Tote Grocery Cart Helper Bag. Each holds 40 pounds (about four plastic bags' worth) and has a Velcro closure and sturdy handles. It clips to the grocery cart at checkout for easy loading. $8.95 at www.reusablebags.com.

Best bag multiples

Baggu X3. The line of Baggu bags, a favorite of Gwyneth Paltrow's, is colorful and functional, with each holding up to 25 pounds. They are machine-washable. A three-pack of the rip-stop nylon bags in a zipper pouch sells for $22 at www.baggubag.com. Individual bags are available for $8 at Home Rule (www.homerule.com).
