Chasco Fiesta celebrates final day for this year

By Barbara L. Fredricksen and Arts, Entertainment
In print: Sunday, April 6, 2008

Thousands lined the banks of the Pithlachascotee River for last year’s Chasco Boat Parade. This parade’s theme was to honor heroes in our everyday lives. It began in Miller’s Bayou and traveled to the New Port Richey Main Street turn basin.

NEW PORT RICHEY — Chasco Fiesta ends today on a relatively quiet note, which should be just fine for those who like to browse the Native American Festival's arts and crafts booths at a leisurely pace, listen to talks about Native American life and, of course, take advantage of shorter lines at the food vendors' booths.

The Cotee River Lions Club serves breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m., and the West Pasco Sertoma Chicken Barbecue goes from noon to 4 p.m., with several other food vendors still open.

The Native American Festival has a full day of speakers and entertainers: flutist Tommy Wildcat at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.; snake expert Okeefenokee Joe at 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.; Steve Hottie's live demonstration of birds of prey at noon and 4 p.m.; Chipa Wolf, Warrior on Horseback, at 12:30 and 5 p.m.; historian Russell Cutts on primitive skills at 1 p.m.; Robin Jumper, history of Cherokee people at 1:30 p.m.; Native American dancers at 2 p.m.; Aztec dancers at 2:30 and 5:30 p.m.; and Mike Gilbert, flint knapper, demonstrating Atlati (spear) and Native American weapons at 3:30 p.m.
