A night of porn at the old honky-tonk

If you're one of those old-time, heartland-values fogies who clings to the dusty belief that porn has no place in country music (and vice versa), consider yourself warned: The NightMoves Awards are coming to the Dallas Bull.

The venerable country club east of Tampa on Sunday will host another Tampa Bay institution, NightMoves magazine, for a show honoring the best local and national performers, clubs and stores in the adult entertainment industry. Stars like Ron Jeremy and Stormy Daniels are expected to pop in.

We couldn't help but wonder: Why stage a porn awards ceremony at a country bar?

In short, NightMoves doesn't distinguish between musical genres. For the past four years, the show took place at the recently closed Bricktown 54 in Clearwater.

"We've used different clubs forever," said NightMoves founder Paul Allen, who admitted he was skeptical when a friend first suggested the Bull. "They're such cool guys, they've got a VIP room there with a dance pole! They've got a stripper pole in their VIP room! They're a lot more hip than people think."

One stripper pole isn't enough for NightMoves, though — they're building another one in the center of the line-dance floor.

"It certainly sounded like something totally different than what we'd normally do, and maybe reach a whole new client base," said Dallas Bull general manager Marty McIntosh. "I thought we'd do it one time and see how it goes, and if it's something that was good, we could probably do it annually."

The awards themselves, while prestigious — "This was the first place that Jenna Jameson ever received an award," Allen boasts — are almost an afterthought to the raucous displays on the red carpet and onstage.

Much of it is not safe for work, but here we are at the end of this article, and you haven't quit reading yet. So we're guessing you might not mind.

NightMoves Awards

The 16th annual NightMoves Awards are Sunday at the Dallas Bull, 3322 U.S. 301 N, Tampa. Doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 8:30. Tickets are $35. Looking for something a little, um, wilder? There are official NightMoves parties, featuring appearances by porn stars, at 9 p.m. Friday at Club Foxy, 4233 U.S. 19 N in New Port Richey; and at 10 p.m. Saturday at the Tampa Gold Club, 6222 E Adamo Drive, Tampa.
