Samuel Brendle assembles the Orient Express amusement ride’s tracks Tuesday beside Orange Lake in New Port Richey, getting ready for the 2008 Chasco Fiesta, which begins today.

NEW PORT RICHEY — Chasco Fiesta, the oldest, largest and longest public event in Pasco County, gets under way today in Sims Park with the opening of the Native American Festival, the Chasco Carnival and the West Pasco Sertoma Beef Barbecue, which once held the record for the world's largest beef barbecue (20,380 pounds in 1980) in the Guinness Book of World Records.

The fiesta continues with daily live entertainment and events in Sims Park and other locales through April 6.

Tonight's big show in the amphitheater is Native American musicians and dancers, including award-winning musicians Arvel Bird and One Nation. The music starts at 7:15 p.m.

Over the next 10 days, there will be nightly entertainment and daily special events, most of them free.

For those who like to eat, there will be 20 food vendors, plus big beef and chicken barbecues put on by the West Pasco Sertoma Club. To work off any extra poundage picked up after munching through all that, there's a golf tournament, softball tournament, fishing tourney and the Rally to Remember foot races and bicycle tours.

Among the food offerings are corn dogs, onion rings, cheese sticks, Frito chili pie, smoked turkey legs, fruit smoothies, strawberry shortcake, ice cream, funnel cakes, grilled chicken wraps, cotton candy, pizza, Philly cheese steaks, meatball subs, kettle corn, soft pretzels, pies, jerk chicken, pork sticks, Cuban sandwiches, black beans and rice, and Native American fry bread, buffalo burgers and gator meat, plus a wide variety of nonalcoholic drinks.

Two Chasco Fiesta highlights are the big street parade at 1 p.m. Saturday (starts at Gulf and Grand boulevards, north on Grand around Orange Lake, south on Bank Street, and west on Main Street to U.S. 19) and the boat parade at 1 p.m. April 5 (starts at Moonlight Bay, cruises south to Sims Park).
