NEW PORT RICHEY — Chasco Fiesta starts at 5 p.m. today in and around Sims Park with the opening of the Native American Pow Wow & Festival, Chasco Carnival, the West Pasco Sertoma Beef BBQ and food booths, and continues through March 29 with parades, athletic events, arts, crafts and antique shows, and other activities.
The Native American Pow Wow goes from 5 p.m. today through 6 p.m. Sunday. The Native American Festival starts at 5 p.m. Monday and goes through 6 p.m. March 29.
The Pow Wow features competitive dancing, with $11,000 in prizes, Grand Entries in full regalia at 7 p.m. Friday, 1 and 7 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday, and drumming.
The Native American Night in the Park concert is at 7 p.m. today on the Sims Park amphitheater stage. Featured performer is classical and traditional guitarist Gabriel Ayala, a member of the Yaqui people of southern Arizona. The evening also features American Indian dancers.
The Native American Festival Monday through March 29 features poets, musicians, flint knappers, dancers, storytellers, history talks and wildlife demonstrations every half hour, as well as native food, crafts, arts and raffles.
Friday's highlights are the Contemporary Christian Family Night concert and Lighthouse Coronation Ball honoring the king and queen of Chasco.
