Extreme winter ice racing coming to Oldsmar

X Games-worthy ice skaters are being called to step up for the Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship. It's a combination of hockey and downhill skiing where participants race on ice skates really fast down a steep track. Alas, the qualifier Jan. 3 in Oldsmar won't have a crazy downhill ice course. The objective is to find the area's top endurance athletes with intense drills. The registration deadline has passed but they are taking some walk-ons at Tampa Bay Skating Academy in Oldsmar, 255 Forest Lakes Blvd. Registration starts at 5 p.m.; qualifying begins at 6 on Jan. 3. The best of the best will go on to compete in the U.S. finale event in St. Paul, Minn., Jan. 24-26. The public is invited to watch for free, but Red Bull organizers warn that this is more about the participants who will be put through endurance drills and stunts.
