Fitness events jump-start those resolutions

Now that our thighs are the size of a Yule Log, it's time to pay the piper, or the trainer, to detox from all that salt and sugar over the holidays. Check out some of these open houses and fitness events this week aimed at putting your New Year's resolution to the test.

Taoist Tai Chi Center of Brandon

You can watch a group practice tai chi at 10 a.m. Saturday and learn more about Tai Chi Chuan. Beginner classes start next week in Brandon, Temple Terrace, Sun City Center and Palma Ceia. The open house is free, and the first class is free at 911 Bryan Road in Brandon. (813) 685-1211.

Tai Chi at MOSI

A six-week series starts Monday at Tampa's Museum of Science and Industry. It's a series of moving meditation in Yang-style tai chi for health. Beginners 6-7 p.m. Intermediate 7-8 p.m. The cost is $60 at 4801 E Fowler Ave., Tampa. Call (813) 932-0241 to register.

Zumbalicious Dance Party

Zumba instructor Nancy Hills leads a morning that includes dancing, live music, healthy snacks, drumming, health and beauty vendors and nonstop Zumba at 10 a.m. Saturday. It's $10 advance, $12 at the door at the Highland Recreation Complex, 400 Highland Ave. NE, Largo. (727) 518-3021.

New Year-New You: Rev It Up 2010

Through Saturday, Largo Recreation offers free fitness classes, seminars, coupons and more, all with the purpose of inspiring fitness. All ages are welcome to try a variety of classes, including Zumba, yoga, line dancing and tai chi. Visit or call (727) 518-3125. Free introductory class, then fees vary.

Healthy Cooking

Chef Sherell White leads a hands-on cooking and tasting session of gluten-free and vegan-friendly food at the Lotus Pond, 6201 Lynn Road in Tampa. It's from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday and it's $30. (813) 961-3160.

'They Said It Couldn't Be Done' Run

This is no ordinary race. Prepare for obstacles and brief surf on Sunday at Honeymoon Island State Park. The 5-mile run consists of 2.5 miles on the park trails and 2.5 miles on the beach at the west end of the Dunedin Causeway. It starts at 8:30 a.m. and it's $20 advance, $25 race day. See

Roller Hockey Open House

Get the kids away from the video games. Kids ages 4-14 can learn about roller hockey and take part in a free introductory skills clinic Monday. Ages 4-10 is 6-7 p.m. and ages 11-14 is 7-8 p.m. at United Skates of America, 5121 N Armenia Ave., Tampa. (813) 876-5826. Get Into Fitness Today is a free six-week weight-loss and health program for adults starting Jan. 14 at the Life Enrichment Center, 9704 North Blvd. in Tampa. Learn how to incorporate good nutrition and physical activity into your lifestyle. It's once a week through Feb. 25 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. (813) 932-0241.
