Thursday's TipSheet

Five things to put on your radar: new Splash park, dyeing for St. Patrick's Day, Falcons and Packers in downtown St. Pete, a celebrity appearance tip and our big deal of the day

You might have heard about a new offshore water park, the first of its kind in Florida, opening at the TradeWinds Resort on St. Pete Beach. The Splash Island Park features giant inflatable seesaws, slides, trampolines and lounges that float in a roped-off area of the gulf. It's scheduled to be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. We know what you're thinking: What's the water temperature, because mayyyybe you'll go if it's not too cold. We checked with the National Oceanographic Data Center, and a reading taken Wednesday put the gulf at 72.5 degrees. By comparison, August temps average about 86, and January temps are 62. We say as long as the air temperature is warm, you should brace yourself and just do it. And about parking: You have to use public parking because the spaces there are for resort guests only.

If you have a family and you don't want to take them to all of the block parties and drink fests that are taking place for St. Patrick's Day, the Rough Riders are coming to the rescue. The fun-loving crew who brought you Ybor's St. Patty's parade last Saturday is dyeing the Garrison Channel green near the Channelside complex. It all starts at 4 p.m. with entertainment, and the dyeing (environmentally friendly, we're assured) starts at 6. And did we mention there'll be beads? Because if you have a krewe, you're going to have beads. (Wait, we didn't forget all of you Guinness drinkers. Here's a list of St. Patrick's Day parties.)

Amid all of the hoopla in downtown St. Petersburg for St. Patty's Day is a pretty cool looking event called Footballers Life. There is a meet and greet for autographs with several current players, including Nick Collins (Green Bay Packers), Sam Shields (Green Bay Packers) and Eric Weems (Atlanta Falcons). It's all at the Lobby Bar and starts at 3 p.m. This event is free, but later you can attend a party at the same spot at 9. That will require a $10 entry fee.

The movie The Lincoln Lawyer opens in theaters this weekend. So that's prompting us to alert you that the author of the book that the movie's based on, Michael Connelly, is giving a book talk at Four Green Fields in Tampa. It happens to be his local pub, as he lives nearby. But the real reason we're telling you is this: You have to sign up for the event, which is April 11. We're pretty sure it will fill up quickly, so consider this your reward for sticking with the TipSheet.

Our big deal today should be considered by those who suspect their medication might be causing weight gain. It's a medical treatment for weight loss that's 50 percent off.
